ENGiNEER
interview
If you are into hard and heavy music you will like this band... another
band from Hex Records
US you might not know, so give them some time and read!
fRk: First of all
please introduce the band to those ones who dont know yet!
Engineer is Mike AuClair
(drums), Bob Gorham (vocals), Brad Gorham (bass / backing vocals),
and Ryan Gorham (guitar / backing vocals).
fRk: Engineer was formed in
mid 2003 and the band entered the studio in October 2003
to record "Suffocation of the Artisan"
seems that you
guys are pretty good songwriters,
aren`t you?!;)
Ha ha. I think it's just
because we work really hard and really well together. Since 3/4
of us are brothers, it's not hard to tell each other when something
sucks and then just
move on. We're just constantly writing and working on new material
along with
practicing everything else.
fRk: Let`s stick to the
point
what`s your process of songwriting
4 guys entering one
room, leaving with one song
how do you write songs and what are
your influences?
We usually start with a
concept/idea of how we want the song to go or how we want the
whole song to flow. And then we just go from there. I (ryan) come
to practice with a riff
or two and then we all just build off of that. Everyone has equal input
in the song writing
process. I think most people would be surprised how much input our
vocalist has to offer.
Even though he doesn't play an instrument in Engineer, Bobby's a really
strong force
of creativity behind Engineer.
fRk: Actually if you were
forced to compare yourselves with some other artists
please start namedropping to make it easy!;)
If you were to combine
aspects of Deadguy, Knut, and Breach, you might get something
along the same lines as us.
fRk: Over the years you
released some stuff
the last thing was called Reproach.
Unfortunately I havn`t had a chance to listen to it yet
so how do
this recordings differ
from the old ones or are there no remarkable differences? Usually time
means progress
We made a lot of progress
with Reproach. I feel that it's way more developed in song
structure and musicianship. We took a lot of time writing it and
working on how the album
worked together as a whole. Our split with Achilles I think we treated
more as a mini full
length with the intro, outro, and instrumental track rather than just a
short/strong release.
With Reproach, we had a lot more time to develop and expand on our
ideas and the
direction we wanted things to go in. I feel it's our strongest and most
cohesive release yet.
fRk: Can hardly imagine
that guys making such music listen all of their time to similar music
;)
so what are you currently listening to?!
I'm currently listening it
Torche, Cursed "II", Examination of the. . ., Grails, and Radiohead.
Harkonen, Breather Resist, and Hum are always in heavy rotation as
well.
fRk: Just had some words
with your label mates on Hex` Achilles
just like them you
joined Bloom:Explode from Germany. So tell us` how did this
happen?
Chris from B:EX got in
touch with us at the end of 2005 about a European tour and or
a release. Since we were entering the studio to record Reproach, it
worked out great that
Chris was interested in putting something out for us. Since Hex was
releasing the cd version,
we still had the lp version open for anyone. Ever since then, we've
been working on getting
this together.
fRk: I know this Chris from
B:EX does also booking activities
aren`t there any existing
plans to come to Europe?
We don't have any plans as
of yet to come to Europe, but we definitely will eventually.
We've had a couple offers that we've had to turn down due to finance
issues, but once we
get that end of things together, we'll be on our way.
fRk: If not
what are
Engineer`s general plans for the next months?
We'll be playing shows and
weekends all through the summer up until our major tour this fall.
And any down time we have, we'll be concentrating on writing. We can't
wait to be back on
the road. But at the same time, we can't wait to be back in the
studio.
